plunged into a speech. I surreptitiously set my
stop watch.
I should mention here that only a few hours
after my arrival in Berlin it was reported to me
that the German Foreign Office was displaying
the greatest interest in my visit and was
particularly anxious to know the reasons for my wishing
to meet Himmler. It was no secret that the
relations between Herr von Ribbentrop and the head
of the Gestapo were decidedly cool. While I was
dining in the temporary quarters of the Swedish
Legation in the Rauchstrasse—very near the old
Legation, which had been completely destroyed
in a recent air raid—a message from Ribbentrop
reached me, expressing the wish to see me at the
Foreign Office the following day. In consequence
I drove straight there from Obergruppenführer
Kaltenbrunner’s residence.
—I stopped my stop watch. It indicated that the
Minister for Foreign Affairs had talked for one
hour and seven minutes without my being given
