understand it. He thought it a great advantage to
Sweden that there were German troops in
Norway, for if there were not, the English would
certainly have occupied that country, and they would
not have shown the respect for Sweden’s frontiers
that Germany had shown.

Before I went, Ribbentrop asked me if I had
any concrete proposals calculated to improve the
relations between the two countries, to which I
replied that I hoped the Swedish Red Cross would
be allowed to carry out certain work in the
concentration camps, and that this concession would
make a favorable impression in Sweden. I had no
intention of letting him know my real objectives.
Ribbentrop approved of my scheme and said he
was glad I was going to meet Himmler. I
suggested that we should have another talk after that
meeting, and this was agreed upon.

Someone once—not very recently—called Herr
von Ribbentrop the Bismarck of the twentieth
century. It is unquestionably a fact that, in his
way, he has continued the work of the Iron
Chancellor, but it is equally true that in the end he
contributed enormously to rendering it void. Nor can
