German authorities had stipulated that the
number of personnel must not exceed two hundred
and fifty, the detachment was composed as
follows: three platoons, each of twelve busses, and
one platoon of twelve trucks. The detachment
further included mobile field kitchens,
workshops, ambulances, and a quartermaster’s platoon.
Colonel Gottfrid Björck was appointed leader of
the expedition. All the personnel were volunteers
chosen from regulars and conscripts in the armed
forces. The military insignia on their uniforms
were replaced by those of the Red Cross. After
the detachment had been assembled in Skåne, the
southernmost Swedish province, it was dispatched
by boat to Denmark via Malmö. On March 11th
it was in Odense, where the Danish Red Cross
had arranged billeting and meals. The
municipality and townspeople showed us magnificent
hospitality, and everything was done by the
Danish authorities to facilitate our journey.

On March 12th we crossed the
Danish-German frontier. Our route was planned to go via
Flensburg, Kiel, and Lübeck to Schloss
Friedrichsruh, which was to be our headquarters. We
