of refugees had frozen to death. The winter had
been very severe in Silesia and East Prussia.
Travel in those days was chaotic. The only
way was by car, for trains took an incredible
time. But motoring was not free from excitement,
for German fighter planes and German
anti-aircraft fire had almost ceased to exist during the
last months of the war, and Allied airmen were
able to attack all vehicles on the roads without
interference. My car was painted white and bore
the Red Cross flag as well as a Swedish flag, but
this was not of much help. The Allied authorities
had announced in Stockholm that, because of the
intensification of the air war, immunity for the
Swedish Red Cross vehicles could not be
guaranteed.
I recollect one day at the end of March when
I was on my way from Schönhausen to
Friedrichsruh. We had just passed the small town of
Perleberg, halfway between Berlin and
Hamburg, when we heard the sound of explosions.
It was an Allied air raid on Perleberg. Presently,
as we drove on, we saw six American bombers
