NEUENGAMME—HOHEN-LÜCHEN
March 28th–April 9th
Nearing the German coast by air, we received
a radio report that a heavy daylight attack on
Berlin was in progress, and we were able to make
out a number of planes in the distance. As it was
impossible to distinguish if they were Allied or
German, our pilot decided to make a landing at
Stralsund. Just as we were circling over the
airfield another message reported all clear, and we
resumed our flight and soon reached the German
capital. It was a sea of flame. A pall of thick smoke
covered all the surrounding country, and when
Richert, our Minister, met me at the Tempelhof
airfield, he told me the all-clear had sounded only
half an hour before.
What had brought me back after only a few
days’ absence was my anxiety lest the activities
