local branch of the Swedish Legation about half
an hour before midnight. Immediately afterward
the sirens began, and I asked Himmler if he wished
to go down into the shelter. I could not promise,
I added, that we should be left undisturbed, for
naturally one could not prevent other occupants
of the building or passers-by from taking cover.
He hesitated a moment, then decided to go down.
A small group of Swedes and Germans had
already collected in the shelter, and Himmler talked
to the Germans, evidently trying to find out what
the popular feeling was. Obviously he was not
recognized. During the hour that we spent in the
shelter I looked curiously at him from time to
time. He struck me as being utterly exhausted and
at a nervous extremity; he looked as if he were
mustering all his will power to preserve outward
calm.

When the sirens shrieked “All clear” we left
the shelter, sat down in one of the rooms of the
Legation, and proceeded to discuss the subjects
about which Himmler had come to consult me.
It was now about half an hour after midnight.
