företer stor liktiet. »Poe and Rossetti», skrev Times på
ledarplats vid Poe-jubileet 1909, »were romantic writers
because they were ill at ease in their own times, and re-
acted against all their circumstances. This reaction was
what they expressed in their art, and it was worth expres
sing .... Since they were starved of the experience of
beautiful things, they imagined a beauty that often seems
unreal and feverish from the intensity of their baffled de-
sire for it» ^ Förutom av en smärtfylld sinnlighet präglas
Rossettis konstnärskap, för att använda en svensk konst-
skriftställares (Nordensvans) ord, av »nervositet, skönhets-
törst, dröm, opiumrus». Det är »en konstgjord värld med
överhettad luft och drivhusblomster, en värld, där männi-
skorna ga i sömnen .... utan tanke och utan vilja ....
hans dröm är uteslutande dröm». Han sökte »the intense,
the individual, the s y m 1) o 1 i c , the mystical», säger Beers
och tillägger: »Probably it was only his austere artistic con-
science which saved him from the fantastic — the merely
peculiar or odd — and kept him from going astray after
false gods like Poe and Baudelaire» ^. Vad »the false
god» Poe J)eträffar, är det väl sann t, att, på ett undan-
tag när, något fullt obestridligt inflytande från denne pä
Rossettis alstring ej låter sig påvisas, men det är väl l)e-
kant, att Rossetti hyste en djup l)eundran för Poe, med vil-
ken hans själsfrändskap är stark. Således låter det mycket
väl tänka sig, ja synes rent av sannolikt, att Poes diktning
bidragit att giva den italiensk-engelske mästarens fantasi-
värld dess morbida, visionära, halvt övernaturliga karaktär
och även att forma hans vers. Ifråga om det nyss åsyftade
undantaget är Poes inflytande höjt över diskussion. Dikten
The Blessed Damozel är nämligen direkt inspirerad av The
Räven. Den är sannolikt tillkommen redan 1846, alltså
The Times, 19 jan. 1909.
