E lived inside the trunk of an old gnarled oak
tree. The entrance was very small, but when

you got well in you might have seen a great big
room, several feet deep, for the trunk was hollow
from where the first branches stretched out their
arms, right down to the roots. It was a splendid
store-room for nuts and acorns, but it was greatly
wanted, for the squirrel who lived there had got
in his head that the more he could gather the
more happiness he would enjoy when he grew old.
All round the oak was a thick hazel-wood, where
