133- Of the Laplanders wild Beafts.

CHAP- XXIX

Of the wild IZcaJls of the Laplanders.

OF all the Beafts in Lap land the Bear is chief: him SaiesSam. Rheen,
they stile King cf the Woods, and gives this reafon, becaufe iji
strength and fiercenefs he exceeds all the reft. They are very numerous,
fome fiercer than others, efptcially thofe which are mark’t with a white
Wreath about their necks, many of which are found in the North. Thefe
annoy the Inhabitants Catttl, and overturn their Stores; which thty Six
on the top of a Tree, to preferve their fleSh and fifli, and all that
concerns provifion : but in one night the Bear deftroys all the food they
have laid up.

Next the Bear the Elk is remarkable, which Olaus calls the wild Afle,
Scaliger confounds it with the Rain-deer, for he faies, tho it had Afles
hair , it was called by the Swedes, Ranger , by the Goths , Rangi/er , by the
Germans, lllend, by the Mofcovites, Lozzi, and Some Books Say that in
Norway they were naraecj Re&en ■ what Books he means I am ignorant, but
I am Sure the Elks, which the Germans call Ellend, were never called
Re-hen , but &lg, or Mlgar, which is now the common name through all
the North; neither can I think otherwife of the Mofcovites Lozzi, for it
is the fame with the Lithuanian Lojfo, as Herbeflenim obferves. That which the
Lithuanians call Lofs, the Germans call Ellend, and many in Lacin Alee.
So that Lofs, Lozzi, AElg , Lllend is the fame. Beaft , but quit? different
from the Rain-deer, contrary to what Scaliger thought. For firftit excells
the Rain-deers in bulk not a little , being as high as any Horfe: its horns
are Shorter, but above two palms in breadth, Shooting outafew, tho not
many young fprcuts. His leggs are not rcund, but long, efpecially the
forenioft: he engages very fmartly, and his Sharp hoofs enable him to
encounter all Men and Dogs that eppofe. He hath a long head, and huge thick
lips alwaies hanging down; his color is not fo white, but all over his body it
inclines to a dark yellow mixt with afhen: w hen he walks he makes no noife
yith his hoofs as ail Rain-deers do; whoever fees both Beafts ( as I have
often ) will perceive fuch difference, that he w ill wonder how any one Should
mistake. There is no grpat breed of thefe in Lapland, but they have them
from other places, efpecially Lithuania. Charles the ninth, hy a public
Proclamation claimed all (he skins of thofe that were killed for his Ex->
chequer, as I mentioned in another place. Ohfus faies that they continue
altogether in the South of Lapland, and are t?ken moft frequently by
running them down , or hunting; in other places they are rarely found:
but it is mauifeft that twice a year they fwim in great Herds
outoiCa-relia, over the River Niva, to wit, in the Spring to go into Carelia, and
in Autumn to return into Rufpa. Seine few Stags have bin feen in Lapland.
S. Rheen mentioning the chief Beafts which have bip found there, reckons
feverall fpecies of four-footed Beafts, as wild Rain-deers, Bears, Stage,

LI Wolves,
