Sarcophyton purpureum, n. sp.

Specific Character.

The zoanthodeme 5 5 mm. high, has the form of a mushroom, The stem, 45 mm. high, 70 mm. in circumference at the
base, 100 mm. under the pileus. The latter is 65 mm, broad, 125 mm. in circumference. The basal part expanded as a disk, firm,
coriaceous, abounding in calcareous deposit. The stem, round, is gradually dilated towards the pileus, has a firm, coriaceous
skin, the upper two-thirds are densely beset with zooids and have a rough feel from the calcareous deposit. On the uppermost
end of the stem occur a few exceedingly small, young polyps. The pileus, convexed, carries about 35 large polyps, irregularly
situated round upon it; between the polyps, thickly set zooids, forming small tubercles, and thus the skin acquires the appearance
of red chagreen. The polyps completely retractile, cylindrical. Body 12 mm. long, 5 mm. broad; tentacles 8 mm. long,
pointed, with a broad base and thick pinnules. Polyp-body, tentacles and pinnules abounding in vinous-red spicules. The
mouth forms a transverse fissure, with thick lips. Polyp-cell elongate, located in the coenenchym, not projecting over the surface.
Colour: purple; the adoral surface of the tentacles yellowis-hwhite.

Specific Character.

The trunk from 25 to 30 mm, high, 3 mm. broad, somewhat compressed, grooved lengthwise, and abundantly
provided with branches, bearing polyps. Between the branches are seen here and there a few long polyps. The polyps
cylindrical in form, 7 mm. long, non-retraçtile, with the anterior part of the body somewhat broad, and having 8 longitudinal ribs,
as also abundantly furnished with calcareous deposits. The tentacles long, having on their aboral surface peculiar spiçules, in
the form of palmate, or thorny clubs. The tentacular pinnules long, without spicules. Colour verging on red.

Specific Character.

The zoanthodeme constituting closely disposed groups of polyps. The basal part stolon-like, membranaceous
expanded. The polyps isolated, but, in some cases, united, two and two, on the outer surface of the basal part. They are
