markets, specially in the form of tool steel, rolled and forged, wire rods, hoop steel
and hollow drill steel.
As previously mentioned, the concentration gradually had led to shutting down
the works not situated in Hofors. An exception forms so far Uhrfors, as manufacture
of horse shoes was taken up and is still carried on there. The factory, started in
1882, is the oldest and largest in its line in Scandinavia.
Since 1916 the Hofors Company, Ltd, is closely connected with the SKF Ball
Bearing Co. The magnificent expansion of this Company’s world-renowned
manufacture of ball-bearings made it necessary to secure a regular supply of
high-grade steel. Negotiations were oponed with the Hofors Company and in 1916 SKF
acquired the shares in the Hofors Company.
Large new works with a pressing forge, wire drawing mill and annealing department
were erected in the years 1916-1918 and, since 1919 SKF runs the steel
manufacture on a lease.
The Hofors Company, Ltd., possesses land of a total area of about 25,000
hectares (62,000 acres).
The wood products are refined in the Company’s own saw-mill, situated at
the Hofors railway station, electrically driven and equipped with three frames and
planing mill.
