| Oscar Halldin The earliest town in Sweden was Birka, situated on an island in Lake Mälar. Birka was laid waste, and Sigtuna, lying but a few miles south of the heathen Uppsala, succeeded it as the centre of trade and the cradle of Christianity. Its church ruins, dating from the 11th century, are relics of the time when the religion of the East and the culture of the West found a firm foothold in the heart of the kingdom of the Sveas. |
