took one hand, and felt tlie pulse during the frictions. They
said that at first ic changed, being sometimes slower, sometimes
quicker, then it got more even, and at the exjoiration of the two
minutes it went comparatively slowly, at the rate of 90 beats a
minute.
An hour afterwards the temperature was again normal. The
patient felt easy and well ; the pain at the small of her back
remained away.,
Jan. 2 bill. The patient was well. ISTo discomfort on swallowing.
Tonsils no longer inflamed ; the coverings gone. Temperature
normal ;
pulse, 7 2. Treated for the last time.
IV. DIPHTHEEIA.
Private Ine F. turned ill on the 10th of December 1888, and
was the same day removed to the Marine Infirmary.
On the 11th, at four o’clock in the afternoon, I saw him for the
first time.
The tonsils were very much swollen—the right one most;
they nearly met in the middle. The right tonsil was covered with
a large gangrenous membrane ;
on the left the covering was
smaller. The lymphatic and submaxillary glands were enlarged,
especially on the right side, where they formed a large continuous
swelling. Deglutition extremely painful. Temperature, 3 9 ’6° C.
pulse, 104.
Progress.—The treatment was begun at once. The swelling
of the glands diminished visibly, and they turned softer. 9 p.m.
The diffuse swelling is soft and oedematous. The patient com-
plains that the sputum and fluids he drinks pass out through the
nose. He keeps the mouth very open. Temperature, 38-7° C.
pulse, 92.
