I do not mean poetry, for I like learning that very much;
but other things which are stupid and tiresome». »Such things,
I suppose, as the multiplication table, and pence table, and
columns of spelling?» »Yes, father, those are the things I
mean; and Latin grammar, and names of countries and chief
towns. Surely, I might as well look for them when I want
them.» »You might do so, no doubt; but whether you might
as well do so, is quite another question, which we shall talk
over by and by. Now, if you like, I will tell you a story.»
»0 yes! I always like a story; what is it about?» »It is a
true story about an absent man, that is a man who, instead
of attending to what he is doing, or to the people and things
before his eyes, has the foolish habit of letting his thoughts
run upon something else; so that he does not know where
he is, or what he is about, but goes on like a man in a
dream, neglecting and forgetting every thing, and making all
sorts of blunders.»

»A gentleman of this turn set out one evening with two
or three of his companions, to walk from a friend’s house,
where he had been paying a visit, to his own house about
a mile off. He was always a little lainé; but he now hobbled
along more awkwardly than usual, stumbling at every step.
At length, he suddenly recollected what was the matter.
»I have forgotten my stick», said he, »and he turned back
to fetch it.»

After he had walked on a good way (stycke) the second
time, he began to feel very cold. »Bless me!» cried he, where
is my great coat?» It was left behind, and he had to return
again. »Well,» said one of his companions, »I hope you are
warmer now!» »Yes, excepting my hands, but they are quite
numb; — 1 declare! — I have forgotten my gloves!» Another
journey back for them. This time, he was quite sure he had
got everything he wanted, and he had nearly reached his
home, when, at a narrow turn of the road, where it Avas quite
dark, he knocked his nose against a post. »How stupid!»
cried he, »I quite forgot my lantern!» — »What a strange man,
father, he must have wasted half his time in going back for
things which he had left behind!» »Yes; and what would a
school-boy do who, instead of having ready in his head the
