24. The Birthday. (Dialogue the 5th.)

A. Is not to-day the eleventh of June?

B. Yes, why do you ask?

A. Have you forgotten, that it is LTncle’s birthday
to-day ?

B. So it is, and we have not bought any presents, I
had quite forgotten all about it.

A. I thought we should not remember it; and now,
what are we to do? You know, we always give him
something; lie will think it unkind if Ave do not.

B. What are we to do? He will be sure to call and
invite lis to tea this evening. How stupid it was of us to

C. I’ll tell you what we will do, we will give him the

B. This you must please to accept as a birth-dav
present from all three; we thought it would be such a nice
thing for you, as you are fond of chess, besides being a pretty
ornament to the room.

JJ. A thousand thanks, my dear girls, for this
affectionate remembrance of your old Uncle; it is indeed a beautiful
ornament.

C. Some day you must give me my revenge, Uncle,
for the last game you won.

U. We won’t put it off to »some day»; our object in
calling was, to ask you to come and drink tea with us this
evening, if you are not engaged.

B. Oh no, we shall be delighted to accept your
invitation.

U. That’s right, come early, about seven o’clock, and
after tea we will play a grand match on the new table with
