Läsebok. N:o 32—33.

32. The Two Asses.

An ass laden with salt was crossing a brook; the water
diluted the salt, and lightened the burden. He
communicated his discovery to a brother donkey laden with wool. The
latter tried the same experiment, and found his load double
in weight.

33. Ill School, a.) (Dialogue the 6th.)

Master. Where do we begin this morning? Let the
first boy tell me the number of the page.

Boy. Page 24, sir, at the bottom; shall I begin ?

M. No, wait a moment, I will first ask you a few
questions about what we read last time, that I may see if you
have remembered it. When did we have the last lesson in
History ?

B. On Tuesday, but we did not read anything last time.

M. With what were we occupied then?

B. You told us something about the state of the Roman
Empire, at the time when Christ came into the world.

M. Of which you took notes of course; you had better
get out your books and look over what I said, and I will
then question you upou it.

B. Shall I get out the books? they are locked up in
the cupboard.

M. Yes, you can do so, but take care of the ink; some
one was careless enough to upset the bottle last night, and a
pretty mess there was.

B. Will you give me the key, if you please?

M. If you look on the chimney-piece, you will see a
bunch of keys; bring them to me, and I will show you which
is the right one — have you found them?

B. No, sir, I think they were taken away this morning
into the next class room; but perhaps the cupboard is not
locked.

M. Well, see first if it is; if so, you must go into the
next room and inquire for the keys. There is a great deal
too much noise here.

1 Boy. If you please, sir, will you speak to Willis, he’s
pulling my hair!

M. Willis, why are you pulling that boy’s hair? Stand
upon the form, sir; do you hear what I say?

2 Boy. Please, sir, he pinched me first.

1 Boy. No, sir, I didn’t, he — — —

M. Silence; I will have you both in after twelve o’clock,
I dare say I shall find out, then, who is to blame. Have
you got the books?
