A. What a breakfast you must eat after it! But I have
a quantity of different kinds of seeds to sow, will you
help me?
B. Most willingly; you have laid out your piece of
ground very tastily; those crescent-shaped borders look very
well.
A. And will look still better, when the box is planted
round the edges; the mould is very good too, but it will
want hoeing, before we can sow anything.
B. Give me the hoe and rake, I will soon get the
borders ready. Have you no sticks for the sweet-peas?
A. I have two hundred garden laths which are being
painted green; I bought them cheap at an auction the other day.
B. "\\ hat did you give for them?
A. Three shillings only, for the lot.
B. Well, that was cheap enough, certainly: I suppose
you intend to make use of them principally in this middle
border.
A. Oh no, there is to be a fountain there, and all round,
to support the earth, a border of rockstones and shells.
B. Over which I suppose, you will train creepers of
various sorts?
A. Yes, they are already sown; the earth has been well
manured, and will be planted with the choicest tulips.
B. It will have a very good effect — but what are the
other borders intended for?
A. Oh, various flowers: in this, carnations and
moss-roses with a bordering of coloured daisies.
B. And here, close to the window, I should advise you
to plant sweet-briar and wall-flowers.
A. That would not be a bad idea; there is plenty to
do here, you see; we have a good week’s work before us.
52. The gladness of Nature.
Is this a time to be cloudy and sad,
When all is smiling above and around;
When even the deep blue heavens look glad,
And gladness breathes from the blossoming ground?
There are notes of joy from the blackbird and wren,
And the gossip of swallows through all the sky;
The ground-squirrel gaily chirps by his den,
And the wilding-bee hums merrily bv.

The clouds are at play in the azure space,
And their shadows sport in the deep green vale;
And here they stretch to the frolic chase,
And there they roll in the easy gale.
