TO SEDAN 141
lines of communication of a German Army. The reader will
see how the railway lines coming from the home bases of
the respective army corps are made to converge towards
the main line of transport which leads to the district of the
lines of communication of an army—in a hostile country
to a principal line of communication depot or " intermediate
base," and how, from this point, a new system of lines of
communication of all kinds^railways, field railways, roads,
water-ways—diverges towards the operating units at the

districts.

war materiel—and to give timely notice of the arrival of men,
horses, materiel and requisites.
Generally speaking, it is the duty of the Lines of Communica-
tion Depot Commandant to look after all the requirements of
the system of the lines of communication itself, and to provide
