WITH THE FOURTH ARMY i8i
nobody wanted to interfere with the rescue work. Thus the
doctor was able to carry his charges into safety.
At another reserve position we chatted awhile with the
grey-coats, who had recently lost a Lieutenant Johannes.
The mound which covered his remains was surrounded by a
perfect battery of shells, standing like a set of nine-pins with
the cross for its centre. Young pines had also been planted
as sentries round his grave.
After a couple of hours with these friendly, merry, brave
and manly fellows, we started out on the return journey to
the flying station, where the guard delivered his report to
Captain Chamier, adding : "It was lucky you did not arrive
a quarter of an hour ago, for just then an aviator passed over
the station and dropped a bomb which burst close by here
but without doing any damage." As a memento I was given
a splinter of the bomb, which it was pleasanter to have in one’s
pocket than in one’s body.
From Somme Py we proceeded south-east to Tahure and
passed on the way an ammunition column perched on the
fringe of the wood by the side of its little cooking pits. Inside
the wood we caught sight of numberless items making up a
transport train, such as infantry ammunition wagons, ambu-
lance wagons, kitchen wagons and spare horses.
In the yards and alleys of the little village there was an
incessant bustle, and it took us some time to thread our way
through. A little way beyond Tahure we left the car once more
and proceeded on foot to another observation post, a little
less important than the previous one, but otherwise on the
same lines. We had hardly got there before shrapnel began
to burst around and over us. An officer advised us to seek
cover in a little trench, which, however, had no roof. For my
part I was quite willing to follow his suggestion, and was glad
to stop in the hole until the fire had died away. A few moments
later another of those winged monsters of the air, known by
the name of war aeroplanes, passed over us, without however
showing signs of wanting to harm us.
