2i6 WITH THE GERMAN ARMIES IN THE WEST
Waterloo. I seized the opportunity of asking at once whether
I should be permitted to visit Antwerp, the sooner the better,
as it might be interesting as well as instructive to know what
a large city which had just capitulated looked like. Why, of
course I might ! I should be allowed to see practically all I
wanted, and if I liked I could return the next morning directly
after seven o’clock and would then be told whether I could
proceed at once without undue risk.
After we had discussed the situation a few minutes longer
I went home. It was then ten o’clock, German time, which,
by the way, had been made the standard time after the occu-
pation and was an hour ahead of Belgian time. At nine
o’clock all shops and restaurants were closed and the streets
were silent and still. Across the square outside the Palace
Hotel and Gare du Nord I was not allowed to go, in fact
anyone attempting to do so was politely stopped by a Belgian
policeman or even Belgian civilians. The reason was probably
that the square must be kept free for military cars, of which
there were always a great number lined up outside those
buildings.
The tramways cease running at ten o’clock. After that the
city is empty and deserted, its population having gone to bed.
