342 WITH THE GERMAN ARMIES IN THE WEST
Through hundred thousands thrills the call
And boldly flash the eyes of all
:
The German, loyal, staunch and true,
Protects that sacred landmark blue !
(Chorus.)
He gazes upwards to the sky.
Where valiant fathers dwell on high,
And proudly vows : For evermore

(Chorus.)
While yet a drop of blood we hoard,
Have yet an arm to wield the sword

To pull the trigger yet one hand

No foeman’s foot shall tread this land !

The vow rings o’er the wave-swept vale-

Proud banners flutter in the gale

we also met a stout and jovial Catholic priest who had been
out that day to the foremost fighting line to preach. He had
passed through the most remarkable adventures with his
lively little grey cob, and he recounted some of them while we
were seated at von Hollen’s hospitable table.
On the notice-board of the Townhall we had seen the
announcement :
" This afternoon at 5 p.m. a short service
will be held in Bapaume Cemetery in commemoration of our
