SUMMARY

in Swedish financial circles, 110 longer possessed the solvency that
earlier had been anticipated. When he was forced into bankruptcy
at the beginning of 1865 a most difficult time began for the company.
During this critical period in Högbo’s history, as well as when the
company was first founded, great help was afforded by a Swedish
wholesale merchant in London, Pontus Kleman. In order to säve the
Högbo company Kleman wanted to form an English liolding company
but both his and Göransson’s attempts in that direction failed. The
Högbo Company was obliged to go into liquidation and the work at
Sandviken stopped in March 1866.

The chapter then gives a description of the different attempts to
form a new company which should keep the works going at least at

The chapter ends with a detailed description of another of the
Högbo Company’s works, Nyköpings Bruk, which at that time was a

between three different periods, the first ending with the celebration in
1885 of the 25th anniversary of G. F. Göransson’s completion of the
Bessemer process. The two following periods each close with the
death of one of Sandviken’s leading men. The founder G. F. Göransson
died in 1900 at the age of 81. From the of the new company’s start
he had the strong support of his eldest son, Anders Henrik Göransson,
who was the managing director of the company and the creator of
sales organisation. A. H. Göransson died in 1910 and was succeeded
by his brother-in-law, Törd Magnuson, who also had started his work
at Sandviken at an early age. Magnuson’s leadership continued until
1920, when the present director, K. F. Göransson, succeeded him as
