Mii oval shape it would now become more and more round. On account
of tlie couscquent change of tlie meridians tlie size of a degree in our
traets would be diminished, so that wliere it formerly was for exainple 10
Swedisb miles it would now perliaps be little more tlian 0. The cause might
lie in this, that tlie eartli formerlv rotated more rapidly than now, wliich
would also bring witli it a shorter time for the revolution of the moon.
This would result in a higher level of the water at the poles, for if tliere
were only 2 or 3 hours between the tidal waves, instead of (3, the water
would not be able to return to its normal niveau before it would be
inrtuenced anew by the moon’s attraction. In this manner tlie sea at
the poles would have been kept higher, but would subsequently, in the
degree that the motion of the eartli and moon decreased, gradually fali,
wliich is proved by the descent of the water in the Baltic and by what
is reported of its ascent in more Southern traets.

Now, if Sweden was formerly covered by water, wliich subsequently
decreased, the highest parts have formed an island-6, as was supposed by
Rudbeck, Senior, and the geographers of former times. By means of
leveling olie niav determine wliich part of the land is the highest, and
wliich therefore fornierly, when the water stood higher, must have been
an island. In this conneetion Swedenborg remarks that it would be of
interest to learn what the height of the Baltic is in relation to tlie
sea at the West Coast.

That the tides must have been stronger when the water completely
covered the land is evident27. Afterwards tliere was liere formed first
an archipelago of larger and smaller islands, then, in the degree that the
mainland was inereased, the tidal phenomenon could no longer make
itself valid in the same ilegree as before. The concluding words of the
work under consideration must be reproduced verbat i m:

Trom the reasons advanced it may doubtlessly be concluded that
our eartli has had a high sea and a dood over itself; that the tops of
our highest mountains and bilis were under its level and have inereased
and as it were built themselves up under the water. It may also be
concluded from the proofs that the sea rose espccially above our North,
wliere it had its highest level and as it were caused the greater rotundity
ot the eartli, wliich was to be seen in a higher degree then than now;
and that Neptune, witli all his Sea-godesses and Nymplis, as it were
enjoyed remaining liere as long as possible, and then gradually departed
and lelt his abyss for us to live and build on, thus enlarging the land
o! Tvea up to the time of the present government,»
