VOCABULARY

I, 29, But thou wast hewn out of an iron womb

And fed with molten mother-snow for milk . . .

evidently = with molten snow for mother-milk.

1 append a list of some other compounds that
explain themselves, though they are not to be found in
dictionaries.

I, 269, ankle-wrings; wrist-rings;

242, banner-bird; 168, grave-pit;

II, 280, bride-feast, bride-followers, bride-song;

165, rose-pleasance; 77, war-wind;

III, 36, flower-belt; 146, lake-springs;

171, snows/line;

IV, 70, billow-belt; 32, rhyme-bell;

39, yester-sun;

1 (b). The second group of purely substantival
compounds is not very frequent; and several cases approach
those that have just been treated. The relation between
the two parts of the compound is, as has already been
stated, a prepositional one; or it may sometimes be still
more complicated.

The following instances can, I think, rightly claim a
place here; possibly there may be some hesitation
concerning the two first:

I, 3, And girdled in thy golden singing-coat,
Come thou before my lady and say this.

I, 289, The fair grass was my bearing-bread,

The well-water my washing-wine . . .

II, 126, As this night was bright

With thy cradle-ray,
Very light of light,
Turn the wild world’s night
To thy perfect day.

[Christmas Antiphones/.

273, Thine let the wind that can, by sea or land,
Wrest from thy banner-hand . . .

IV, 35, The light ship lifted her long quivering bows .. .
Out of the wave-breach . . .
