Explaining "What is ..."

In this section, we try to explain some concepts that are important to what we do, from our perspective. This means, these are our explanations, not the only explanation, and not always the complete explanation. Where possible, we make reference to other, more complete sources.

E-text - Electronic text
E-text is the idea of storing text in a computer rather than printing it on paper. Paper consumes trees, is expensive to copy, is hard to search through, is easily destroyed by fire. Electronic text does not have these drawbacks. Of course, paper has advantages too, but for some purposes e-text is quite nice. Project Runeberg is one of several e-text producing projects around the world. We have good relations to other e-text projects.
Lifelong learning
Project Runeberg notes with interest that the European Union has devoted 1996 to be a European year of lifelong learning. Project Runeberg has no relation to this initiative, but believes in learning that goes far beyond the scope of one human life. Human language is a way of communicating experience between individuals. Written text is a way of transferring such experience that transcends generations. Project Runeberg uses the Internet as a way of transferring written text that transcends any distances. Even if you are in Australia in 1996, you can use Project Runeberg to learn what someone experienced in Iceland in the 13th century. Nobody will teach this to you, and you don't have to learn it. But if you want to learn, we want to provide the means.
Literature
What is literature, really? If you have a good definition, let us know!
LYSATOR
LYSATOR is the organization within which Project Runeberg belongs.
Nordic countries
Project Runeberg publishes Nordic literature and art on the Internet. The "Nordic" region is a group of countries in northern Europe, bound together by similar history, traditions, languages, religion. Governments of the Nordic countries cooperate within the Nordic Council of Ministers since 1952. For more information, see the Nordic FAQ.
OCR - Optical Character Recognition
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a technology whereby printed text can be transferred to a text file in a computer. This is one important tool for Project Runeberg, as we scan printed books to make their text available to you over the Internet. When you buy a scanner, some OCR software often comes bundled with it.
