DYKES IN SEILAND

I. THE GEOLOGY OF THE REGION
i t u a t i o n. The island of Seiland lies in West Finmarken in
the northern part of Norway in 70° 25’ N. lat. and 12° 20’
E. of Christiania. Its area is 596 square kilometers. It belongs
to the Caledonian mountain chain. (See Fig. 1.)
Previous geological work. The first geological information
we have of Seiland is due to B. M. Keilhau \ who mentions gneiss,
micaschists, and diorite, as the chief rocks of the island.
Th. Scheerer made a description of some minerals from the is*
land 2. Later on, the main geological features of Seiland were made clear
by the works of a zealous student of the geology of northern Norway,
Karl Pettersen. His papers bearing on this subject are the following:
