3&3

The real nature of such lines can be inferred with
certainty from those belonging to the y-class above, e. g.

tilfs fot viS sker S6ta
grams fall a sae allan
stinn jam a sok minni
Gauts tafn en na hrafni
flagSs blakk ok svan hlakkar

It is obviously unnatural to assign the value of J- to the
word which has always a short (or final) vowel, and to
declare that the word which is naturally long (fot, fall, etc.)
is only ±. Hence we are forced to refer such lines to the
D-type, and to give their metrical scheme as

Now, as the lines belonging to the a, /?, and d-classes above
are under precisely the same rule with regard to the noun
in the fourth place, it follows that they must be scanned in
the same way: Su&virki lift bu&ir, grei&endr a skip reicfir,
etc. are thus not E-, but D-lines. The importance of this
fact for the accentuation of compounds is at once apparent
(cf. § 14).

§ 13. We are now in a position to deal more closely
with various types of lines which at first glance seem to
have the same form, but on closer investigation are found
to differ from each other in unsuspected ways. Some feeling
of such a distinction underlies Prof. Sievers’ attempts to
discriminate D- and E-lines, but his results do not bring out
the real differences which exist in a very marked fashion
throughout all correct dr6ttkvsett. I begin with lines of
the a-classs, i. e. of the type Norfrmanna gram porfti,
hertf-andi 16t sver&a, hryttfiski mik brynju, etc.

We have just seen that such a line as the first of these
is metrically J-1 s w ^ | s ^ and the third might very well
be taken in the same way; but how are we to interpret the
second, to which may be added valsendir hraud vandar,
unn-solar galt’k runnum, etc.? Are these to be set down as
