how matters stand.

These numbers point to one clear fact, that the hending
naturally attached itself to the alliterative letter. The
exceptions indicate (1) that in a second line the hending might
fairly well be placed in the first element of the compound,
and (2) in a first line it might exceptionally be placed in
the second element or in the first word of the line, as rauS
Hringmara heicfi and hafa allframir jofrar.
A few words may be added on the character of the
compounds which occur in these lines. The great majority
have the first element distinctly long, as launstafi,
pjdtf-konungr, hjalmtomum, sandhimins etc.; these number 55 in
all, while those with short or final vowel, as liftprota,
n#-logay hdsalar, qfalan, amount only to 15. Comparing these
with the forms discussed in the preceding section we find
that the metrical value of a compound depends on the
quantity of its second element, so that it must either be ^ £ ^
or v^^w, the tendency however being towards the definite
types & ± w and ± ^ ^. Of course even liftprota, hasalar,
etc. have metrically the latter value (cf. § 23). There are
some exceptional lines in which the compound has only two
syllables, viz. 38 latr einorfr ft fircta, 39 fremt Aleifs kvefik
frdmfruj 41 fedr Magnuss bicfk fagna, vdrt torrek lizt verra.
These are all by Sigvat, and it is worth while to remember
that some people found fault with his metre at times.
§ 21. Where the trisyllabic word is not a compound
of the above type, there are two cases to be considered.
