Skjaldekvad by about 26 examples *), of which only 4 are
first lines: the following list will show the kind of words
that chiefly occur in these.

In all these cases we may safely assume that the trisyllable
is metrically J- ^ ^.
The second class (setting aside some proper names, as
Eirtki, Ingolfi, and the conjectural Ujotondum) is noticeable
as regularly containing words ending in -m^r, -ungr 2) as
for example:

The other words not included in these specimens are
fjor&ungi, hyltinga, vildnga, vertfungar. Before the metrical
value of these can be decided, it must be remembered that
such words at the beginning of a line are treated exactly
like compounds, i. e. are J- J-; thus,

’) It is doubtful, however, whether some of these can fairly be
reckoned here, e. g. 16 bldSs skjaldafiir stddum, 22 void hugnadish skaldi, which
may simply be J- \ J- ^ ^ \ ^. I have not included the two lines 22 sv&fk
hermila harma and 28 en dreypileg drupir, which are probably ^ | J- ^ ^ \
J-y^. For several reasons I hesitate to accept the view that forms like
leitafti, brotnuctu had regularly a secondary stress (Altg. Metrik 60—61).
