It will at once be noticed that these examples come almost
entirely from the three poets Korm&k, Hallfred, and Sigvat.
Yet even with these the type is exceptional. In Korm&ks
Saga some 500 lines are given as his, but only six such
lines occur, viz. the four quoted above, and hins mum
hor-gefn spyrja (73) and h6gg hiaut huglaus dugga (75). None are
found in Bersi’s verses in the same saga. In Hallfreds Saga
there are about 200 lines of lausavisur; these contain only
the three examples quoted above. In the 64 lines preserved
of his Ol&fsdr&pa there is one instance, hraustr pd’s
her-skip glasti, but it seems possible that this, with the lines
before and after it, may have crept in from a verse of
Ar-nor’s (see Hkr. 515). In his Erfidr&pa (200 lines) there
is also one example, 6&usk m&lm^ings mei&ar.

The impression we thus get is that even if all these
lines can be depended on, the type in question was avoided
by most skalds of the 10th century, and examination of the
general body of dr6ttkv«tt verse belonging to that period
fully bears out this view. It may be doubted whether a
dozen examples, of whose genuineness there is any
probability, could be found in verse earlier than 1000 A. D.
Even Sigvat is not much given to using it; from his verses
given in Heimskringla only the following examples can be
added to those quoted above: 230 ait, es skjoldungr mdttit,
