Craigie: Skaldic Metre.

492 hverr sm hundsverk starri, 516 ut retf allvaldr sfyota,
527 til hvat btimenn vilja.

In the work of later skalds the type tends to become
more common, but it is remarkable that in a large
proportion of the examples the word in question is a synonym
for ’king’, as allvaldr, bragningr, siklingr, budlungr, etc. The
explanation of this probably is that these were looked upon
as substitutes for the name of the king {Aletfr, Magnus) and
so treated as proper names, but apart from this the verses
in Heimskringla from p. 515 onwards (about 1030 A. D.)
show a marked increase in the number of lines of this form.
The following may serve as specimens:

Arn6rr 515 bdru brimlogs ryri
£j6d61fr 516 hloctu hirdmenn pruSir

„ 529 vik skar vandlangt eiki

„ 538 6ft vas ordrif latit

„ 539 titt bar tymargr flotti
Arnorr 541 regni haustn6tt gegnum
I>j6d61fr 542 gekk meet mannd^rd mikla

„ 544 harm ept hervig prennin
559 Mil d hlebord siSan

„ 595 aim dro npplenzkr hiimir

„ 596 senn a svipstund einni.

In historical specimens of fornyrdislag this ending J- w, if
not altogether wanting, is certainly very rare1), and this is
also the case with the more regular of the Edda poems. On
the other hand it is common enough in some of the less
regular ones, as in Voluspd, where we find such lines as pat
vas enn folkvig, brotinn vas bordveggr, sviirt verba s61skin,
trofta halir helveg, etc., so that here again we notice a
remarkable correspondence between these poems and the later
developments of dr6ttkvsett.

§ 26. As might be expected, something similar holds
good with regard to lines of the type 2 ^ | J. M the first
foot being formed by a compound word. There is, however.

’) Ivar’a bitu slog suftrcen is an isolated instance.
