Craigie: Skaldic Metre.

381

’Grapples you to the heart and love of us*,

he had certainly no intention of substituting J- ^ for ^ ± in
the metrical scheme of a decasyllabic line, although that is
the real value of the word he chose. Similarly I am
convinced that when the skald made the line en tdlf of glaft
Qylfa he was not thinking of ^ + \ ^ + \ + ^ but simply of
± | jl ^ w | j. w modified by certain conditions into ^ | -^ ^ ^ |
J- ^. The ground-scheme of any metre must be kept quite
distinct from the variations it may assume in actual use,
and that an essentially trochaic metre like dr6ttkvsett could
change abruptly into an iambic is a very dubious assumption.

§ 28. If the views I have tried to establish above are
correct, there are in reality only two main types of dr6ttkvsett
lines, but it is more convenient to recognize three, the second
and third being distinguished from each other by the
position of the secondary stress, when this occurs. Denoting
the types by the letters A, B, C, we have the following
scheme:

Without secondary stress. With secondary stress.

B J-\± ^^1^^ -^|-^w|-^

C J-\J-^^\J-^, I J-\J-„*,\J-„

Lines having secondary stress may be further modified
by lightening of the first syllable from J- to ^. Specimens
of the various types are:

A-lines.
A 1. a. hlahkar hagli stokkinn
brunnu beggja kinna
