A Short Remark.
Dr Olson’s review of my edition of the Old Icelandic annals
called Konungs Annáll l) bears witness of much accuracy and
painstaking. I should have wished to escape entirely from the
odium of having to write a literary rejoinder but for the same
critic’s somewhat annoying manner of implying doubts as to general
inaccuracy in my editorial work. The very severity of his careful
investigation, for which I am much obliged to him as a fellow-
student, might have led Dr Olson to a result widely differing from
that which he has arrived at and published in his review.
I, therefore, avail myself of Prof. Kock’s kind offer to pub-
lish at once in this journal some few remarks bearing upon my
edition and methods, which, otherwise, could have been spared un-
til my C on cord an ce, P h o n o lo g y and A c c id e n c e o f K g sA
is printed.
I fear it would seem impertinent, if I entered into details
here concerning the accumulation of difficulties, both exterior and
intrinsic, which cropped up during the process of printing. One
can scarcely exaggerate all the time-absorbing impediments and
disappointments by which an editor is checked, who to such an
extent taxes the compositor’s patience and, indeed, exhausts him
as the writer has done. But on one point at least I cannot sup-
press my claim to the justice and sympathy of whoever chances
to glance over the pages of my edition. W hile the printing was
going on exceptionally slowly, I emphasize by half-sheets and stre-
tching over a period of a year and a half with long intervals, the
supply of types at the comparatively small University Press ran
short several times. Consequently, I had to supplement the prin-
ting-office’s stock and, finally, to pay a balance of a few hundred
kronor, being the amount of extra expenses not covered by the
University allowance. Also the palæographic plates, drawn by
myself, had to be lithographed at my expense. Dr Olson might
have done me credit by fairly mentioning them.
