Buergel Goodwin: A Short Remark. 335
Dr Olson blames me for an excess of misprints. Quite apart
from the question as to whether he is justified in his statements
or not, a point which I shall shortly touch upon, let him compare
what other editors, for instance Prof. P ipping1), had to record in
the way of help and support, with my conditions while at work.
Not one of my Uppsala fellow-students or pupils had time enough
to spare for assisting me in reading the proof-sheets. From the
time my request to get my MS printed by the Old Norse Text
Society in Copenhagen was refused — by the way merely on ac-
count of my still being in the position of an alien in Scandi-
navia — and I, thereby, was deprived of the best resources in exi-
stence, I struggled on by myself and worked out a system on
strictly ”diplomatarisk" principles, which, far from being intended
as an innovation, simply carries out the page-for-page, line-for-
line, type-for-type principle with such restrictions as commonsense
and typographical limitations would necessitate. With regard to
most of the consequences, and inconsequenses as well, to which
Dr Olson objects I have not gone one step farther than my mo-
dels, so e. g. with regard to d, v, M, N; D, F etc. a). These prin-
ciples, however, led me into many pitfalls which made it difficult
to keep my chief-object in view, the reduction of unavoidable mis-
prints to a minimum. The first and second, often also the third
and fourth proof-sheets I received with inverted types as tempo-
rary substitutes for missing ones, which considerably added to the
complexity of my work. On the whole, I must confess, that, in
spite of all my efforts, and chiefly owing to the lack of any sort
of help, I was doomed to disappointment and in the end I was
so tired out that I had no energy left to collect a more compjete
list of misprints before the sheets had to be ready for the Års-
skrift. Subsequently I wanted to put off the publication of a com-
plete list till I had received my Concordance from the press. Be-
cause I had mentionedthis Concordance in the preface, my con-
science was at rest while my attention was absorbed by a similar
work, which would, besides, augment my practice in reading and
dealing with Old Norse MSS.
I also trusted, that an eventual critic would not fail to dis-
tinguish misprints from misreadings. Of the latter sort Dr Olson
has, or rather imagines to have, found one: 2 1 v 2 2 above the
line tapez. He prefers to read tapet and informs his readers, that
this is a fault of the manuscript-writer’s for capet, which state-
ment, though partly correct, is entirely beside the point. But
wherefrom Dr Olson gets his authority for pointing out the form
