122 Hollander: Gautrekssaga and Hrólfssaga.
at fadir þínn kom vid Gautland ok fadir mínn tók hónum
hardla vel ok baud hönum til veizlu ok þat þá hann ok
var hónum veitt it kappsamligasta; sat hann þar mjok lengi.
Fadir mínn átti þá gripi., er ágætir vóru; þat vóru stódhross,
hestr mikill ok vænligr, apalgrárr at lit med fjórum merum.
Ok at skilnadi gaf Gautrekr konungr fbdur þínum marga
dýrgripi, er ágætir vóru, ok þessi stódross gaf hann hónum.
Födur þínum fannz mikit um hrossin ok þackadi Gautreki
konungi mikilliga gjafarnar ok skildu med blídu.––––––
Fadir þínn lagdi mikla ást vid hrossin. Yar þat ok eitt
hrossit, at miklu var vænna en önnur; þat var silkibleikt at
lit. And then Hrólf goes on to assert that Hrossþjóf, as
well as his brothers, are the result of Hrosskell’s intercourse
with that mare. Whereupon they set upon him with a
whoop and of course are slain.
Indeed, there can be little doubt that the passage last
cited is original with the Hrólfssaga, and the source of the
passage of the Gautrekssaga — which wears an apologetic
look on the very face of it, and has all the earmarks of an
interpolation *). At the same time, to draw herefrom, and
secondarily from a still less evidential passage, to be dis-r
cussed below, the conclusion that, hence, the whole of the
Gautrekssaga was composed later, and as an introduction to
the (shorter) Hrólfssaga,, would seem quite unwarranted.
Nor are there any other plausible intrinsic reasons given to
m otivate this view.
Several arguments may be urged to re-establish the
priority of the Gautrekssaga.
For the first, Ranisch has not managed, and from the
nature of the case it would be difficult, to prove, or even
to make it reasonably sure, that the only MS. of the so-
called shorter version containing this episode — L — really
*) Ranisch, 1. c. xx. — As to the possible origin of this episode see
excursus below.
