L contains the same episode in a slightly better con-
nection. Nú er af Gautreki kóngi ad segja, ad hann stýrdi
Tel sínu ríki. Margir vóru hans rádanautar. Follows the
Hrosskell episode. Then we are told of the fetching of his
queen from Vin(d)land.
This difference of insertion is to be considered in con-
junction with the fact that the contents of the several pas-
sages differ significantly *). I set all three passages here
again, to afford comparison.
Hr: Fadir mínn átti þá gripi er ágætir vóru; þat vóru
stódhross, hestr mikill ok vænligr, apalgrár at lit med
fjórum merum . . . Var pat ok eitt hrossit, at miklu var
vænna en önnur; þat var silkibleikt at lit.
AbC: — hann gaf Hrosskeli stódhross gód, hest grån
ok med fjögur merhross; þau vóru öll silkibleik ok hin
vænustu.
L: Kóngur átti einn ágætan stódhest; hann var grár
ad lit; eitt merhross var med hestinum silkibleikt ok sv6
fagurt, ad ei fjekk vænra.
In brief: according to L, Hrosskell is given a grey
stallion and one mare, yellow as silk; according to AbC, a
grey stud-horse, and four mares yellow as silk. Hrólfss.
has the full account: A studhorse, being a large and fine
stallion of dapple-grey color, and four mares one of which
is finer than the others and yellow as silk.
In the Hrólfssaga, Hrosskell is mikill vinr Gautreks
konungs; in AbC, vinr Gautreks; han var mikill vlkingr:
in L, only vinur kóngs.
That is, both L and AbC, both inaccurate, resemble
their source each in its own wav. The inference to be
drawn herefrom is — not that some prototype of existing
versions was differently adhered to by L and AbC, — but
that they are independent of each other in this matter; that,
