Studies in the Jómsvikingasaga.
1. A Vindication of the Codex Holm. 7 quarto redaction.
The problem presented in the handing down of the
Jómsvikingasaga consists in the fact that we have no less
than five mutually different versions; of which one, to aggra-
vate difficulties, is a Latin translation, by Arngrím Jónsson,
of a lost original which probably fell a prey to the flames
in the great fire of the Copenhagen library in 1728. Be-
sides, we possess the widely differing accounts of Saxo
Grammaticus (book X), of Snorri (Heimskringla, Olaf Trygg-
yaSons saga), and of the Fagrskinna (esp. ch. 50—65). Still
further, a number of Scaldic verses by the Icelandic poets
Einarr skálaglam, ^órdr Kolbeinsson, Tindr Hallkelsson,
fórleifr skúma, and Yigfús Vígaglúmsson, all of whom are
said to have participated in the great battle of the Hjør-
ungavåg in which the Jómsvikings went down to defeat
before Håkon jarl. Finally, there is the Jómsvíkingadrápa
of bishop Bjarni Kolbeinsson and the Búadrapa of forkell
Gislason.
The MS. relations of the saga have recently been sub-
jected to a searching analysis by S. A. Krijn 0? in response,
I suppose, to Mogk’s statement2) that a new and thorough
investigation of the saga still remained a desideratum. Her
results are, as a whole, acceptable, though open to correction in
