at least one major instance. I subjoin the ones bearing on
the question at issue.
None of the versions entirely represents the original
saga. There are younger elements in all redactions.
Cod. 291 (referred to in the following as 291) shows the
interpolator in almost all passages where this versieg differs
from the others. Its style exhibits non-classical elements.
The version of the Flateyarbók (Ftb) shows the in-
fluence of the Heimskringla.
Cod. AM. 510 (referred to as 510) contains only the
second |>áttr. It betrays late influences in vocabulary and
contents and is written in an extremely prolix style.
Arngrim Jónsson’s translation (A), made about 1595,
is thought to be, on the whole, a close reproduction of his
original. — It might have been added that the different
medium, and especially the pompous style of the Renaissance
— removed by a whole world from the Icelandic simplicity
— makes a satisfactory comparison difficult.
Cod. Holm. 7 (H) no doubt offers, as was observed
early, a rather condensed version of the saga. Krijn wil-
lingly acknowledges a ”terse, vigorous style” in which
”nowhere a word or a remark is superfluous” to be typical
of H; but holds, at the same time, that this cannot have
been the style in which the saga was composed originally.
In proof of this contention she adduces a number of pas-
sages supposed to be unintelligible except by help of the
other versions. I shall examine each of these passages.
1) The third sign seen by earl Klakharald — two
billows clashing in the Limfjord and all the sea being in-
carnadined therefrom — is interpreted by him as follows
(H 5, 25): pat mun vera fyrir missæti nacquara storeflis
manna her innan landz, ok munu par gøraz af storir bar-
dagar ok mikil styriolld, ok meiri van at pessum firdi uerdi
afspringr nçckurr —. The last phrase is held by Krijn to
