5. To the same category belongs still another omission
laid at H’s door *): Next morning after the banquet (at
which Sigvaldi is induced to perform the heitstrcnging that
he will conquer Norway or die) his clever wife reminds
him of the big words that he had used and asks him how
he means to get out of it. Eptir þetta gôra pau råd sin
— so H. (25, 28), whereas all the other versions tediously
rehearse the plan which in H comes to us as a delightful
surprise during the ensuing conversation between Sigvaldi
and the king. It is hardly necessary to ask which is better
story-telling.
6) After the battle in the Hjørungavåg earl Eric ap-
proaches the Icelandic skald Jáórleifr skúma and asks him
(H 31, 12): hui ertu pannveg yfirlitz sem þu ser at bana
kominn. He makes answer: eigi munnda ek vita nema
blodrefilinn hans Yagns kæmi vid mig littad igôr er ek
laust hann kylfu hôggit. Then Eric: illa hefir pinn fadir
þa haldit. — K rijn2) thinks Eric’s words in the other re-
dactions preferable, e. g. 291 p. 121: ilia hefir pinn fadir
pa haldit út á lanndino. segir hann . ef pu skalt nú deya —
or, 510 (p. 89) which she thinks still more plain: haldit út
á íslandi etc. — Comparing Einar skálaglam’s stanza im-
mediately following we shall come to exactly the opposite
conclusion. H 51, 14: petta heýrdi Einarr skålaglam ok
quad visu 3):
øllungis hefr illa
eybangs, ef skalt deyja
(vist hyggjum pat) viggjar
valdr, pinn fadir haldit.
”din fader har lidt en bitter sorg — det tror jeg tilvisse —
hvis du skal dø, søfarer”. Indeed, we are led to think
that H, here too, preserves the original, and that the other
