198 Hollander: Jómsv. saga.
MSS. show a lack of understanding of the idiom halda ilia
”to undergo hardship” and have tinkered with the text.
Krijn fails to state, moreover, that Fagrskinna here fully
agrees with H. *)
7) The further lot of the Icelandic poets who took
part in the battle is told in Ftb., A, and 510 (291 has
lost the last 1—2 pp.). ”This very natural conclusion of
the saga was omitted by H”. Against this are to be held
the following considerations. In the very nature of things
the end of the saga is weakest — the persons brought
together in the powerful climax of the great battle simply
disperse. We are told about the later lives of Håkon, Vagn,
Sigvaldi. Does it seem at all likely that an Icelandic scribe
at all interested in his narrative would have omitted so
telling an item as that about Einarr skålaglam: urdu þau
hans æfilok at hann druknadi a Breidafirdi, ok heita þar
sidan Skal-eyar, þviat þar rak skaler hans — ?
This exhausts the list of serious omissions cited by
Krijn against H 2). In order to go quite sure I have re-
examined the entire material, for the double purpose of
finding whether H does omit any essential point and whether
the other redactions, singly or collectively, can be proved to
have adulterated the text as against H.
8) There is great diversity among the redactions con-
cerning the details of the finding of Knút and his accession
to the throne. We may note that Ftb. in particular seems
guilty of flagrant petty interpolations. E. g. the child is
deposited in the forest which is, of course, called Myrkvidr;
the king hunts there þetta sama haust, ok hird hans pli, i
allgódu vedri ok fóru at dýrum alldine etc. etc.; the two
hirdmenn are (here only) brothers; they proceed, not only
]) It adds: ef þú skalt eigi heim koma til handa honum; but there is
nothing said about his father’s journey, ed. Munch-Unger p. 53.
