A, and 291 all ag:ree in expanding the accession of Knut
by the typical interpolator’s story of having the king’s coun-
cillors sent for to agree to his choice.
9) Assuming ca. 810 as date for the birth of Knútr
hinn fundni, the sihorter line of kings, as given in H, is
quite sufficient — whatever the historic truth — to account
for the lapse of tinne, without the interpolation of a Hçrda-
knút (as in 291), or of Hprdaknút and another Gorm in
the remaining redacttions:
(about 810) Knutr hin.n fundni born.
(about 870) Gorm hinm barnlausi born; dies (about 935).
(about 900—910) Knútt Danaást and Harald Bluetooth born (from
Gorm’s, presumably late, marriage with Thýra).
935 Knut Danaást diess; Harald Bluetooth king.
974 Otto’s expedition.
10) H 5, 31 we learn that litlo sidar gaf Haralldr
iarl riki sit allt Knáti fostra sinum, enn iarl for ut i launnd.
ok tok ar vid kristni. For the latter statement we find in
Ftb. p. 104 byrjadi hann nú ferd sína súdr i Valland etc.;
and in 291, p. Ill, fór Haraldr sudr a laund ok kom i
Saxland — both of which look like variant explanations of
H’s ut i launnd.
11) Entirely different accounts are given of Knút Da-
naást’s death. According to H 5, 35 he is killed by a
hostile arrow when with his brother Harald on an expe-
dition against king Adalstein of England. There is no en-
mity indicated between the brothers. Both 291 and Ftb.
represent Knut slain by his brother: Knút is returning with
3 ships from his Holsten dominions to celebrate Yule with
his father Gorm when he meets Harald fresh from a Baltic
cruise wnth ten ships?. At the same time Ftb. (in the chapter
on Ivarr beinlauss) contains also an account of Knút having
been killed in England (introduced as a variant: þat er
sumra manna sçgn etc.) which in several places agrees verb-
