202 Hollander: Jómsv. saga.
ticularly stating that Sveinn Saumæsuson grows up in Zealand
and is well treated by Pálnatoki and his men — a small trait
but one that shows that H is not inclined to abbreviate.
16) Leaving Pálnatoki’s banquet, where he is confronted
by his past amour and her son, the angry king refuses
Pálnatoki’s parting gifts — so in all versions but 291.
There, the king means to refuse the gifts but accepts them
nevertheless on the advice of Fjplnir. Still, they separate
in anger — an impossible situation!
17) The episode of Bjçrn’s rescue of the Welshman
left in the king’s hall, when Pálnatoki and his company
make their escape, is omitted in A — advisedly; for though
unessential to the story it is surely no interpolation. Earl
Eric refers to it in the testing of the Jómsvíkings after the
battle. Holding this together with the resolute cutting down
of the episode of Yagn’s entrance into Jómsborg it is un-
deniable that Arngrim did not scruple to abbreviate his text
whenever he thought fit *).
18) The manner of king Harald’s death at the hands
of Pálnatoki is elaborated in a coarse manner in all versions
but H (and A?), which is hardly to be ascribed to the
original author, although it may contain reminiscences, from
other traditions, of Pálnatoki’s prowess as an archer and shows
some slight agreement, perhaps, with Saxo’s account of Harald’s
death: Ubi cum exinaniendi uentris gracia arbustis insideret,
a Tokone iniuriarum suarum ulcionem siciente, sagitta uul-
nus excepit, etc. etc. . . . celerem uite exituin habuit2).
19) According to H 12, 21 Pálnatoki advises Sveinn,
who is ahut in the bay by his father’s fleet, as follows:
skolum ver leýsa skip var pH ok veíta atródr flota konungs
— the idea being to. break through in the darkness with
main strength and join the fleet of Pálnatoki lying beyond
