210 Hollander: Jómsv. saga.
Boer *), in his edition of the Örvar-Odd saga is absol-
utely sure of the Cod. Holm, redaction being easily the
best that has been handed down.
As to the MS. fragment of the Egilssaga it is (acc. to
Finnur Jónsson (pp. X IX —XX) of his critical edition) of
equal value to W (— Wolfenbüttel) which is the second-best
redaction of the saga.
Yery much the same, then, would seem true of the
Holm, version of the Jómsvíkingasaga in relation with the
other MSS. Of course, it will by no means do to transfer
the opinion concerning one saga in a codex to the redaction
of another. Still, there is at least the presumption that the
scribe (in this case the same for all four sagas) had access
to a good collection of reliable MSS.; also, that any tend-
ency of his, whether toward abbreviating or interpolating,
would on the whole remain the same. Now, I would not,
to be sure, go so far as to maintain that Cod. Holm, of the
Jómsvíkingasaga should be used to form the basis of a
critical edition (as Boer and Detter were able to do) — the
divergences are too great. Still, among the extant redact-
ions it seems to me to offer by far the most trustworthy
text, besides ranking by all means highest artistically.
2. The Composition of the Jómsvíkingasaga.
Is the Jómsvikingasaga historic writing (from the Ice-
landic point of view) or is it to be understood as a work
of fiction? Life is infinitely rich in new forms. It may
or may not be more wonderful than fiction. Certain it is
that the inventions of the literary artist, even the greatest,
are bound to repeat themselves, sooner or later. We may
go through the entire Heimskringla, for example, I venture
to say, without finding a single instance of ’repetition of
