220 Hollander: Jómsv. saga.
grazed off all the grass from the ground and returned then
to the sea. This was his second dream that three other
oxen seemed ascend up out of the sea. They were all red
and had great hprns, and they grazed off all grass from the
land and then returned into the sea. The third dream was
that the king again saw three oxen come up out of the sea.
They were all black of color and were by far the largest
of them all and had the greatest horns and also grazed off
the grass from the land and then returned into the sea.
And thereafter he heard a crash so great that he thought
it could be heard in all Denmark, and he saw it came from
the turmoil of the sea as it returned to the land. — And
|>yra’s (homiletic) interpretation is as follows: Whereas you
saw three white oxen come up out of the sea, that will
signify that three winters will arrive with great snows so
that the crops will be diminished in Denmark. But whereas
there appeared three other oxen of red color, that signifies
that there will come three winters without much snow and
yet not favorable. And whereas there came up the three
black oxen that signifies that there will come three winters
so hard that men will not remember their like, and there
will be a famine such as men have never known before
etc. Taking warning from these dreams J>yra and the king
have grain and provisions collected from all parts of the
realm ,?
and so every year until the lean years come, so that
no one thereabouts was wanting in the least, because they
shared much of their stores with their countrymen. No
wiser woman than f>yra ever came to Denmark. She was
called Danmarkarbót (Denmark’s Savior)”.
The resemblance of Gorm’s dreams about the three
times three oxen with Pharaos dreams about the fat and
the lean kine and the good and the thin ears, as well as
J>yraJs with Joseph’s interpretation of these dreams is obvious
