of the usual solid walls of the semicircular apse on each side

instead of columns, to form the chancel (see sketch).
Outside all this ran a circular corridor enclosed by the
circular outer wall (1-04 metres in thickness). The inside
diameter of the hall is thus 33-73 metres, while the sides of the
square marked by the four piers are rather over 13 metres.
