(s. 295—296)l. Här erinras om konungens bekanta yttrande, att han ville
vara »den förste medborgaren bland ett fritt folk»; en förhoppning uttalas,
att han måtte begagna hela sin makt för att hindra sina egna undersåtar
att taga del i en handel, »som skulle sätta en outplånlig fläck på den ädla
svenska nationen»; och han ombedes mottaga några brefvet åtföljande böcker,
väl värda hans uppmärksamhet, emedan de innehölle en bedröflig tafla af
de olyckliga afrikanernas lidanden.
Enligt Clarkson (I, s. 565) fick kommittén genom Sparrman sedermera
underrättelse om, att konungen gunstigt mottagit såväl brefvet som böckerna2;
han hade bemyndigat Sparrman att meddela, att han tyvärr — »in
conse-quence of those hereditary [sic!] possessions which had devolved upon his
majesty» — nödgades erkänna, att han vore härskare öfver en ö [Sankt
Barthélemy], som hufvudsakligen blifvit befolkad af afrikanska slafvar, men
