Proposals for publishing, by subscription, T wo Graphical Plates, designed
for Colonial Undertakings, on the Western Coast of Africa. Dedicated
by permission to the Right Honourable Paul Le Mesurier, Lörd Mayor
of the City of London, 1794. 1 blad fol.
Den första af de här annonserade taflorna skulle innehålla »a new
chart of those parts of the Coast best adapted for Colonial Undertakings,
viz. from the North side of the River Gambia, to the South side of the River
and Cape of Mezurado»; den motsvaras af den stora karta, som åtföljer
Wadströms Essay ön Colonization.
Den andra taflan skulle innehålla: 1) The Harbour and Site of the new
Colony at Sierra Leone, on a larger Scale, surveyed by William Dawes;
2) A Map of the Island of Bulama, ön a larger Scale . . .; 3) Plans of the
Buildings, Plantations and Gardens, already executed by P. Beaver, Esq.
Governor of that Colony [Bulama]; 4) T wo proposed Plans for Houses,
sui-table to the Climate, on new Constructions, founded ön Philosophical
Prin-ciples, etc. — En sådan tafla har icke utkommit, utan innehållet fördelades
på fyra särskilda planscher, bifogade 2:a delen af Essay ön Colonization, 1795.
Enligt prospekten skulle taflorna beledsagas af »A Tract to elucidate
the plates, containing a variety of hints, anecdotes, and observations, parti
-cularly adapted to hot Climates» ... Ej heller denna »Tract» blef utgifven.
An Essay ön Colonization, particularly applied to the Western Coast of
Africa, with some free thoughts ön Cultivation and Commerce; also
Brief Descriptions of the Colonies already formed, or attempted, in
Africa, including those of Sierra Leona and Bulama. By C. B.

Detta Wadströms omfångsrikaste litterära arbete afhandlar till en början
åtskilliga med kolonialväsendet sammanhängande frågor: vederläggning af
invändningar mot koloniers nytta och utförbarhet; anvisningar för deras
anläggning, skötsel och styrelse m. m. Inblandade häri meddelas förf:s tankar
i politiska, sociala och nationalekonomiska ämnen: 51 »frågor» (I, s. 85—92)
afse »the mysterious and complicated evils of monopoly and speculation»;
tvenne längre exkurser behandla dels mynt och banker (II, s. 342 — 347),
dels plantageväsen (II, s. 248—259). Större delen af boken upptages af
redogörelser för olika nationers kolonisationsföretag, beledsagade af talrika, dem
belysande dokumenter och utdrag ur tryckta arbeten. Det kapitel, som ägnas
åt de Brittiska kolonierna, handlar hufvudsakligen om Sierra-Leona- och
Bulama-kompanierna; under rubriken »Swedish Design and Attempt» (II, s.
