THE HAMILTON COLLECTION OF
ENGLISH PLAYS IN THE ROYAL LIBRARY,
STOCKHOLM

By

ISAK COLLIJN, Stockholm

ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT COLLECTIONS of old English
plays in existance outside of England and America is undoubtedly
that, which came from the Hamilton Library at Boo to the Royal
Library Stockholm, sometime during the 19th century. The collection consists
of seven volumes in 4° bound in plain white parchment with green edges.
On the back of each voltune the contents are written in ink, now faded and
yellow with time. A printed exlibris with the Hamilton arms is to be found
stuck inside six of these volumes, above which is, J. A. Hamilton, and under,
Boo Bibliotek. In addition, there is still another volume, which now is
bespoiled of its cover, but the contents, together with the green edges indicate,
that even this volume belonged to the Hamilton collection. In a case
containing unbound English plays there is one solitary pamphlet, the green
edges of which shew, that it also had once been bound in a Hamilton volume,
and judging by the size of the pamphlet, probably in the last mentioned
volume.

The original owner of this collection was General-Major J. A. Hamilton,
once Master of the Royal Household, and later Governor of Falun
(b. 1734, d. in Örebro 1795). There exists at Boo (in Svennevads parish,
Närke) at the present moment an entailed estate, the library of which is
stated to contain between 3,000—4,000 volumes of both earlier and later
Swedish, German, French and English literature.[1] The plate J. A. Hamilton’s
exlibris is preserved in the Library of the Diocese of Linköping.
