»The tragicall history of Dr Faustus», and »The rich Jew of Malta». The
former is an edition from the year 1628, which is unknown in the English
bibliographical literature (fig. 1). The Hamilton copy will now be the
seventh known edition, and is, without doubt, the most valuable number
of the collection. Of Kyd, there is his »Spanish Tragedy», (in the 11th ed.
1633) and of Greene, his renowned »Historie of frier Bacon and frier Bongay»

Among the dramatists belonging to the Jacobean Period may firstly be

works written by Fletcher alone. Of the plays written by George
Chapman (d. 1634) there are »Bussy d’Ambois» and »The Conspiracy of
Charles Duke of Byron», by Thomas Dekker (d. after 1640) two plays, of
which is one of his earlier comedies, »The shoo-makers holy-day». Of John
Webster (d. about 1625), one of England’s most famous dramatists, is his
renowned »The duchess of Malfy», as well as his comedy »The devil’s law
case», in its first edition. Other dramatists of this period, who are
represented in the Hamilton collection, are John Marston (d. 1634), Thomas
Heywood (d. after 1641) with not less then nine works, amongst which
his most famous play »A woman kilde with kindnesse», Thomas Middleton
(d. 1627) with amongst others »A trick to catch the old one», in its
third edition of 1616, the oldest print in the whole collection, William
Rowley (d. about 1642), with three works, amongst which two of his best
»A new wonder, a woman never vext» and »A match at midnight», both
in their first edition. John Day (d. about 1640) with his best known play
»The ile of guls», and Thomas Nabbes (d. after 1638). One of the most
active and popular dramatists of this period was Philip Massinger (d.
1638); of his works, four are preserved in the Hamilton collection, amongst
which being »The renegado» (first ed. 1630). Massinger, together with
