»THE INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL COMMITTEE» 71

collaboration manifested themselves owing to the great distances between
the Executive and the Local Committees. It is the general opinion of the
Executive Committee, that Geneva is the most suitable centre for the
Com-mittee. Thanks to the Rockefeller donation to the Library of the League
of Nations, a great and modern library, equipped with a well stocked
biblio-graphical reference library will be erected before long. In this case, an
eminently adapted secretary for the Union, would be the librarian of the
League of Nations. Certain formal reasons have, however, prevented the
negotiations hitherto entered upon, from leading to satisfactory result, so
that the Union has not yet been able to take action in the question of
choosing a secretary. At the meeting at Rome 1928, Mr Uhlendahl, director
of the Deutsche Bücherei at Leipzig, therefore officiated as secretary. It is
to be hoped, however, that this question will also realize a satisfactory
solution at the approaching Congress at Rome.

It is the intention of the Union to maintain the various sub-commissions
after this first World’s Congress, partly to work out accounts of the experiences
gained at the Congress and partly, by continued international collaboration,
to further extend the results thus attained, for the purpose of augmenting
and spreading knowledge amongst the people, as the device of the Rome
Congress runs, »per l’incremento e la diffusione del sapere fra gli uomini».
Our new Union may here be justified in adding »for enlightenment and
understanding between the various nations».
